What should have been a period of progress—marked by improved infrastructure and smoother roads—has instead become a growing public safety concern. The very developments meant to enhance mobility are now contributing to reckless driving, avoidable crashes, and needless loss of lives. The Irony of Development The construction and rehabilitation of roads across Abia State deserve commendation. However, these newly paved, smooth roads have unintentionally created a false sense of “freeway driving” among motorists. Many drivers now see these roads as an opportunity to overspeed, ignore traffic rules, and disregard other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and commercial transport operators.
